UM Volunteers in Mission
We still need your help!
On December 3, 2007, heavy rains, melting snow, high winds and mudslides combined to create a 500-year flood of the Chehalis River in Lewis County, Washington. The small town of Adna, population approximately 900, had 185 homes damaged by the floodwater. Twenty-two of them were destroyed, disappeared or condemned. The road to recovery has been slow. Many families are still not back in their homes. They are “camping” in their driveway, staying with friends or relatives or staying in a motel.
Many organizations and churches of all faiths sent volunteer teams to the area in the first weeks and months after the flood. However, it is now more than eighteen months later and the number of volunteers have dropped dramatically even though the need for help is still great. Most of the “mucking out”, demolition and debris cleanup have been completed. They are now putting things back together. The tasks run the gamut from hanging sheetrock, mudding and taping, painting, hanging doors, trimming, plumbing, electrical hookup, and hanging cabinets, to building fences. There’s a job there for any skill level. If you are at least 14 years old and would like to help, contact:
