Live Strong

A Member’s Tale by Rick King

I have always thought is as important to give back as to receive so this past June I enter the Live Strong event, a 5K run. You may remember that “Live Strong” was founded by Lance Armstrong following his fight with cancer. Monies from this event went to the cancer association in its never ending fight for a cure. Joining with other fine people from Western Washington and raising funds for the cause struck me as a fun way of doing some good community service and helping a good cause.

Thanks to Fairwood Community United Methodist Church and the NW Chapter, Paralyzed Veterans of America I was able to give $500 to Live Strong. Thank you to everyone who supported me in this effort. It was my pleasure to carry your banner on this little journey, starting at the Children’s Theatre of the Seattle Center wending through downtown Seattle and ending up back to where we started—fitting, given how most things in life tend to go full circle. Along the way I received thumbs up from all the spectators and members of Seattle’s finest, both police and fire department, giving a boost of energy to everyone on the course. At the finish line we were all given a yellow rose as a representation of the yellow standard that represents Live Strong with a luncheon following for all participants.

Thanks to those who helped support me. It was a privilege to help raise funds and awareness for this wonderful organization and to play a small part in finding a cure for this dreaded disease.
