by Mike Sharp last modified 2007-06-04 09:18

MAY 10, 2007

ATTENDEES:  Ron Wendt (CC Chair), Janet Wendt  (substitute CC Secretary), Bob Burnett (Adult Council),  Donna Stock (Stewardship),  Curt Stock (Youth Council), Lisa Burns (Preschool Task Force), Bruce Keough (Missions), Dick Mathias (UMM), Lynn Howard (Children Council), Mary Marvin (representing Worship), Sharon Kenyon (Greening), Lyndall Foulds, (Lay Leader), Paula McCutcheon (Pastor)

Opening prayer: Donna Stock

Introductions: Lisa Burns was introduced as the new chair of the Preschool Task Force.

Celebration of Ministry:

Pastor Paula shared church joys – had a great Sunday School Teacher’s meeting last night. Carol Colborne’s 5th & 6th Graders celebrated the lives of the Virginia Tech victims. They prayed for the shooter and his family also.

Work on the pre-school is going full out. Steve Hagg is helping get the facility in working order and up to fire code.

Health Ministries: Ron Wendt for Janet Wildeboor - The “Celebrate Your Life; Plan Your Death” seminar was very well attended. Janet wanted to thank Sharon Ramos for facilitating the directives discussion.

Donna Stock – Confirmation classes are going very well. The confirmands recently visited a Jewish temple. A lock-in will be held soon.

Greening: Sharon Kenyon – Cropwalk was very successful. Overall the event may have exceeded last year’s total.  Gratitude was expressed for the recent Creation Sunday service.

Worship: Mary Marvin (attending for Shelley Johnson) – We had the smoothest Easter services ever! Set-up worked very well. Attendance was very good for the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services also.

Minutes:   The April minutes were approved with no corrections or changes.

Joyful Hearts Preschool Update:  Lisa Burns – The Preschool Task Force has two new members: Jenny Yeager and Julie Brumley. There are already 13 potential students. Carmella hopes to get 36 students enrolled.

Carol Colborne’s design was the winning logo for the preschool. There is a new sign out in front of church which bears the new logo. Advertisements have also been placed in some of the local publications.

Pre-School fund raising events are being planned.

1) The Twilight Golf Event is being held on June 30, 2007. The fee to participate is $50.00; $25.00 of the fee will go directly to the preschool. The task force hopes 100 people will participate. Dinner will be served at the church following golf. A raffle will be held at the dinner. The planning committee is looking for donations of gift baskets to raffle and for volunteers to help with the dinner.

2) September 22, 2007 is the possible date for a dinner and silent auction. Cyndi Ewing and Sherry Ferguson are heading up the effort to organize this event.

Joyful Heart Giving Tree – A giving tree has been set up in the Narthex. Each heart decoration represents items needed for the preschool. There are also “hearts” that are asking for cash donations. It is estimated that $2500.00 is the minimum amount needed to outfit a classroom.

Start Date for Pre-School – early September. Date will be announced.

The Library is the preschool office. At this time the long room (where 5th and 6th  grade Sunday School is held) will be outfitted and brought up to code for the preschool. In the near-term, all the classes will be held in the one room. Steve Hagg has been preparing estimates for the work needed to bring the room up to code. Upgrades needed include new heaters, doors with crash bars, smoke detectors, and proper shelving. The goal is to get the classroom prepared in the near future so the parents of prospective students can visit the facility.

Building Security:  Steve Hagg - Trustees checking on the church at various times have found the building to be unlocked and unoccupied. We may need to assign a person or persons to lock up the church following the second service. The congregation needs to be more alert to security issues; we are leaving ourselves vulnerable to safety and security risks. There was discussion about assigning the lock-up task to the ushers or the sanctuary coordinator for the second service. Please note we are currently looking for a Sanctuary Coordinator for the second service.

Church Officer Enrichment and Support of Ministry: Paula discussed the plan to offer a spiritual enrichment session sometime in July that would be led by Pastor Paula, Lyndall Foulds, and Alan Jacobsen. The session would be offered initially to committee chairs with the hope that the committee chairs would share the teachings with their various committee members. The session will focus on the question “what is God calling us to do?” Paula talked about a book called Christianity for the Rest of Us that discusses the renewal and revitalization of churches. It is hoped we can explore new ways to do ministry and as a church get back in touch with God, with our spiritual disciplines, and with each other. Suggested dates were July 15 (Sunday evening) and July 21 (Saturday morning).

United Methodist Foundation: Ron Wendt – FCUMC has its first endowment.   The Council voted on and approved a resolution to create two investment accounts for the $15,000.00 endowment. The signatures of Ron Wendt as Church Council Chair and Sharon Ramos as Church Council Secretary were needed to move the process to the next step.

Round Table:

Dick Mathias – Emily Ross would like to visit our church again to tell us about the wells that were built following her last visit here. The date will be the June 23, 2007 at the UMM Breakfast. All are welcome to attend.

Bob Burnett – Adult Re-Confirmation Class. Please read the article Pastor Jim wrote in the May Epistle and provide feedback to him.

Sharon Kenyon – The Greening committee has a hike scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2007. The Sustainability class has begun. We have 12 people signed up. Feel free to join a session – you don’t need to read the materials in advance to join in. The Greening committee also hopes to provide Sunday School activities during the summer. Sharon also shared that Salvation Army representatives spoke at a recent REACH meeting about issues in Zambia.

Mary Marvin – The Pentecost and Confirmation service will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2007 at 9:30 AM in the MPR. Set-up for this special service will be June 2 (Saturday) at 9:15 AM. A Youth Service is planned Sunday, June 10, 2007 at 9:30 AM. This service will also be held in the MPR and will include recognition of graduates. Beginning Sunday, June 17, 2007 we will move to our regular summer schedule of one service beginning at 9:30 AM. Services will be held in the sanctuary. The summer schedule will be in place through Labor Day weekend.

Pastor Paula – Pastors will be on vacation May 21 through May 27. A guest speaker will lead the service on May 27. Family Camp will be held the week of July 2, 2007. Scholarships are available.

Annual Conference will be held June 12 – 16, 2007 at UPS in Tacoma. FCUMC will be represented by Lyndall Foulds and Dick Mathias. Annual Conference Sunday will be July 8 and will provide Lyndall and Dick an opportunity to share their Annual Conference experiences.

Finance Committee –Lyndall shared that Tom Foulds will be leading the effort to gather requirements for a new church database.

Youth – Curt Stock shared that a dance held recently at our church was a great success. The Youth have a trip to Spokane scheduled for May 26-28.  Our Youth have selected two organizations to support this summer: 1) Walk for Rice – an event is being held June 16 at Seward Park; 2) Habitat for Humanity – scheduled for July 9-13 in Federal Way.

Donna Stock will be away for several Sundays in the near future and has arranged for the following volunteers to take care of Sunday announcements:

May 20 – Jeff Howard

June 24 – Carol Colborne

July 1 – Jules Tieman

Bruce Keough – would like to post some communications from our missionaries in Nepal on our website. He was advised that Mike Sharp is the contact to make that happen. He was also advised to contact Julleen Snyder regarding funds available for Missions from our Christmas and Easter special offerings.

Lynn Howard – Teacher Appreciation Day is planned for June 17. Acolytes will be recognized at this service also. VBS will be held the week of July 30th – planning is underway. It is anticipated the classes will be held Monday through Thursday with Friday set aside as a celebration day.

Closing Prayer: Pastor Paula

Respectfully submitted,

Janet Wendt
