Worship at Fairwood Community UMC

Come worship with us! We have two times for worship services and Sunday School on Sunday mornings.

Our first service at  9:00 a.m. is our "Celebration" service. We have more contemporary music, guitars and a song team to lead us in singing. We use a projector throughout the service for our song lyrics and other worship elements.

Our second service at 10:30 a.m. is our "Classic" service. We have more traditional hymns and an anthem with our organ and adult choir, as well as more traditional liturgy and responsive readings. We are starting to project the words for the hymns on the screen in front for those who find it easier than using a hymnal.

However, occasionally things are mixed up a bit. Our Youth Vocal Band, and adult Rise and Shine singers participate in both services at times so that we experience a bit more variety in our worship music.

Holy Communion is a time to remember Christ’s self-giving sacrifice on our behalf, a time to celebrate the living presence of Christ among us, and a time to receive nourishment for our task of being Christ’s disciples in our world. Ours is an open table, meaning that anyone who desires communion with Christ may partake. You do not need to be a member of our church to participate. Our elements include grape juice and bread (and a gluten-free cracker option).

Instead of celebrating Holy Communion every first Sunday of the month, we celebrate it on special Sundays, often the first Sunday of a liturgical season or other celebration Sunday. On February 12th and 19th, we will offer a brief time of Holy Communion and prayer in the library next to the sanctuary at about 10:10. Because we've had few people attending these weekly Holy Communion times between services, we will no longer offer it after February 19.

Sermons are often based on the Revised Common Lectionary scriptures.  The schedule of these may be found at this link:   Revised Common Lectionary

Children participate in the beginning of worship along with families. During the children’s moment in the service, children are encouraged to come forward for a special time with the pastor. After this, they are invited to attend age-appropriate Sunday School classes. Children 3rd grade and older can also serve as acolytes during worship. Acolytes bring the light of Christ into the worship service and then take it out at the end of the service. They may also help with Communion by serving the gluten-free option. Children are also invited to be part of the "Joy Singers" choir and occasionally lead us in singing during worship.

See the "Sunday Morning Schedule" link at the left for the schedule of classes for adults and youth. All youth and adults have the opportunity to participate in educational classes as well as worship on Sunday mornings.

Anyone who would like to participate in worship leadership by ushering, lay reading, serving Communion, operating the PowerPoint slides during the service, etc. should contact Donna Stock, Worship Committee chairperson. If you'd like to sing in our adult choir see the "Choir" link at the left. Look at the Youth pages on the website for information about Youth Vocal Band.

See you in church!
